Choosing the right window sash balance replacement parts
A window is made up of multiple parts. Firstly, there are glass panes that are held in place by a frame. A sash window comprises of one or more movable panels (sashes) that serve as a frame to contain and prop up the glass panes.
A sash, therefore, is associated mainly with windows that have panels that can be opened by sliding horizontally or vertically. There are also double-hung sash windows that use spring balances to support the sashes. Sash balances are an alternative to traditional sash cords, and offer the advantage of being retrofitted to any sash window.
As sash balances sustain the weight of the window pane, their springs may wear out or fail over time. Watch out for sashes that don't stay up when opened. This is an indication that you need new sash balance or need some sash balance replacement parts.

Tips on ordering sash balances and replacement parts
- Start by removing the channel balance from the window. Measure the length of the metal channel.
- Next, look at the back of the channel balance and identify the stamped or laser etched number. It will either consist of four numbers or two numbers and a letter. For instance, CAT No. FA2530, the number stamped on the balance is 2530 or 25-3.
- Now, check the chart to find the corresponding length channel and corresponding Cat.No.
- The chart also lists out the vent weight range indicating how much sash weight the channel balances can hold.
- If you order a channel balance repair kit, all the information you need to carry out the replacement, is included. It includes rivets and take-out clip.
Installing the balances
If both the top and bottom balances are being replaced, the shorter balances must be used for the top window. Push the sash window downwards to its lowest point and then insert the sash balances. Add the balances through the top into the window channels. For PVC windows, the balances will be placed inside a channel in the jambs. The sash stops must be fitted to the jambs if they are not already present.
