Our History

It started in the late 1940s in a radiator repair shop in Austin, MN. Francis Anderson, a Swedish immigrant's son who had only completed the fourth grade, established a modest radiator repair business in Austin. He was committed to following one of his many memorable sayings, "If it's hard, you're doing it wrong." He quickly invented rubber expansion plugs to facilitate radiator leak testing. In the end, these plugs were offered for sale across the nation. In actuality, the plug and supply division of the company split out into a little independent organization, which after Francis's passing, carried on as a "hobby" business in Dale's basement.

A New Opportunity

In the middle 1980s, modifications to radiator design and the introduction of replacement radiators severely hurt plug sales. The company's founders found that many swimming pool firms around the nation were purchasing plugs from their neighborhood radiator stores to utilize for pressure testing the piping of swimming pools. Anderson Manufacturing discovered an unmet demand for professional-grade tools and knowledge on how to more successfully and quickly address the challenging work of locating and repairing leaks in the pool business by listening to these pioneers. What began as a short-term initiative became a new business chapter.

Low Tech Plugs and Sophisticated Electronics

Anderson expanded the test plug product line into a comprehensive assortment of products that addresses all aspects of the leak detection process based on feedback from experienced technicians in the field. One illustration of this expansion was the release of the well-known LeakTrac Vinyl Liner Leak Detector. Christian Alm, a retired electrical engineer, had a leak in his pool in the early 1990s, but no one could seem to find it. Anderson Manufacturing helped create a crude gadget to discover his leak using his understanding of electronics and a few parts from the neighborhood Radio Shack.
